A lot of people have been asking me about in-person pitches at conferences.

Here is, I think, my best answer: Author-agent speed dates, Diet Coke, Purell, and self-deprecation that doesn't work.

And yes, someone really did accuse me of sneaking wine into a pitch session, of requesting work (I can't make myself type that phrase again!) just to suck up, and yes, my hands really did get crunched.

Enjoy!

These are both effective and dangerous. They're the most portable, self-sufficient form of caffeine I've found--which is great for conferences that, for some reason, think caffeine is a sometimes drink*--and dangerous, because if you don't know (as I didn't) that Coke Zero is far from caffeine-free--and, for some reason, decide to drink two of them before bed before an important event like your cousin's wedding in which you are a responsibility-laden bridesmaid--you'll be in trouble.

From "cookies are a sometimes food"--a sentiment I strongly disagree with.

Thanks for this. I have my first ever agent pitch session coming up at the end of the month so it's a nice and timely refresher.

No vomit plus request of materials with secret coder ring instructions (cereal with cartoon animal spokes...animal not included) to remind agent whether to read with interest or with friends/colleagues/aspiring authors/elementary school students to laugh together in amusement equals golden.

Dear GK,
My theory on the DC vs CZ is this: They both have health-horrible chemicals, but DIFFERENT health-horrible chemicals. Therefore, whenever I'm somewhere with CZ on tap, I switch to that, to give my body a break from it's regular DC health-horrible chemicals. Both taste like floor and both are necessary to my existence. And I love them with every fiber of my being.

Thank you for the pitch post! A nice reminder.

And as far as cookies being a "sometimes food?" Pshaw. I had two pieces of pie for dinner tonight. (I was working on my synopsis and thus feeling rather stressed out. So sue me.)
