The Help

It's delightful when works surprise me.

The Help is a combination of many things I generally don't like:

  • multiple perspectives
  • writing that often does not conform to standard spelling (so as to match the characters' voices)
  • a page count well over 400
  • and--because I'm a contrarian--a #1 position on the NY Times bestseller list.
Guess what? I love it.

Yikes! Over 400 pages...That's a lot of pages.

I am actually reading this book right now. What an amazing first novel for Kathryn Stockett. Too bad you aren't in the Chicago area - she is hosting an event in Winnetka, IL (just about 15 miles north of where I life) this upcoming summer. Not sure what the ticket cost will be, but given how impress I am with her book so far, I think it would be worth the cost.

Absolutely! I completely agree on the delightful read..and a first time author to boot...It made this unpublished author ask, "Why even try when there's SOOOOOO much talent out there already?"
